Tomorrow night, the Artty Raynes Band returns for a major holiday bash playing soul, funk, country and rock the whole night long - $5 cover.

Saturday night will bring Four On The Floor in their first appearance at The Grog. A great night of classic rock - $5 cover.

And to warm you up for New Year's Eve, the Sunday Blues Party with Parker Wheeler, welcomes Bev Rohlehr, John Colby, Chris "Stovall" Brown, and The Big Buzz Horns - $7 cover.

It Was A Very Good Night

The much anticipated Whiskey Dinner was a smashing success last night. Simon Brooking led an astounding tasting of six single malts. Guests were greeted with a cocktail of The Dalmore 12 with a mulled orange slice and ginger ale. The first course of Smoked Sea Scallop Mousse en Croute was paired with The Dalmore 21. To follow was Stillman's Dram with the North Atlantic Salmon Roulade - both melted in your mouth. Enter Laphroaig Quarter Cask, a single Islay malt, with its signature of peat and oak - just as the Braised Short Ribs with Polenta reached the tables. A sigh of contentment... But, there's more! The Dalmore Cigar Malt accompanied the Warm Apple & Walnut Tarlet and the assembled guests thought the night was complete. But, no... a bit of Winfrey's Dark Chocolate was passed with the final treat - a tasting of Laphroaig 30 year old single malt. It just don't get any better than this. New England Wine & Spirits put a great night together and many of the whiskeys tasted are currently available there - with more to come. Simon Brooking single-handedly provided a course in single malts - their history, their production and aging, and an understanding of their complexity. The Grog did itself proud as well, with General Manager Bill Nichelmann, Chef Patrick O'Neill and Sous Chef Matt Bradley ensuring a night that will be remembered. Yes, it was a very good night.

December Marks Seventeen Years of Parker Wheeler & Friends

Parker has put together quite a line-up for his seventeenth anniversary of The Blues Party.

Every Sunday night, except SuperBowl Sunday, come whatever may come, Parker brings the best of the blues world together for an incredible jam session. If you haven't experienced a Sunday Night Blues Party, you have missed a great time. There is a way to fix that, though - just come by any Sunday night at 6pm. The lines get long and a little intense so you might want to come early - and eat!

On December 2nd, the featured guests are Michelle Willson, Mike Williams, Amadee Castenell, Tom West, Wolf Ginandes & Steve Bankuti - $7 cover

On December 9th, Tom Hambridge returns - $7 cover

On December 16th, Toni Lynn Washington, Bruce Bears, Cliff Goodwin, Amadee Castenell, Wolf Ginandes & Steve Bankuti join Parker - $5 cover

Our New Fall Menu Is Here

The days and nights are cooler and they're here to stay for awhile. Our fall/winter menu is sure to tempt the chilled traveler or local patron looking for warmth, a blazing fire in the fireplace and good food & drink.

We heard your comments and our Black Bean Soup is back! This hearty soup is filled with ham, beef & sausage - and, oh yes, black beans. We've added a cool weather salad - our Harvest Salad with sliced almonds, sun dried cranberries, bacon & jack cheese. The romaine & mixed greens are tossed with a warm citrus vinaigrette just before serving. You can enjoy the salad plain, but it is best topped with our duck breast.

Our new Sausage Sandwich is sure to be a winner. The sweet Italian sausage is grilled and served on a toasted ciabatta - topped with our new red onion apple chutney.

It's a little difficult to dress up a turkey burger, but we have found a way... a little provolone cheese, some sauteed mushrooms and a hint of chipotle sauce with a final grilling on marble rye. This is really good!!

Our fish selection is getting better... and bigger... all the time. We've added a Pan-Seared Sea Bass with a miso wasabi glaze and it melts in your mouth. The glaze is very mild - as it should be with this fish - allowing the the mild, subtle richness of the Sea Bass to be fully enjoyed. Cedar-planking for Salmon has become the rage and we decided to make this popular Specials Menu item a permanent part of the fall/winter menu. And we get additional kindling for the fireplace as a bonus!

Comfort food comes to mind with our addition of Braised Short Ribs to our Grill selection. These beef short ribs are served over our mushroom risotto and baby spinach. This food feels good and is good!

Our Pasta section has seen the return of the Butternut Squash Ravioli, served in an apple cider and Biscotti liquor reduction with roasted apples and a hint of Parmesan. Our customers begin to ask for these in September and there might be a bit of an insurrection if we didn't bring them back. We've also added a simple Chicken/Broccoli Alfredo with penne and the classic alfredo sauce and we've brought back our hearty red sauce dish - Rigatoni Marinara with baked rigatoni and meatballs.

Friday night the Evan Goodrow Band returns for a great night of soul and blues. It is said - If James Brown had a white son who cut his teeth playing the chitlin’ circuit, you might get something like Evan Goodrow, a soul-singing, blues guitar playing powerhouse. Next week he heads off for the South Florida International Blues Festival so take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy some great music locally - $8 cover.

Saturday continues our blues orientation for the weekend with the return of The Undaunted Professor Harp playing his special brand of roots music and blues - $5 cover.

Parker Wheeler's Blues Party adjusts to the seasonal time change this Sunday with shows starting at 6 pm through next spring. This Sunday's jam brings together David Hull, Robert Holmes, Thom Enright and John Colby - $5 cover.

New England Whiskey Society Presents A Multi-Course Scotch Dinner at The Grog

Now, this is exciting. That comment obviously shows this blogger's affinity for fine single malts...

New England Wine & Spirits and the New England Whiskey Society will be sponsoring a multi-course Single Malt Scotch Dinner Upstairs at The Grog on Thursday, November 29, 2007. Each course will be paired with a complimentary sample of the full range of single malts from The Dalmore. The special guest speaker will be Simon Brooking, Master Ambassador. Tickets are $50 each and are available from The Grog or from New England Wine & Spirits. The event will start at 7 pm. This is definitely going to be a sell-out. Don't wait until the last minute for tickets.

The Five Days & Nights of Halloween Are Upon Us

Tonight, the funk rock group Third Man High returns and spices up the evening with a funky costume event. What? No World Series game to watch? Everyone will be at The Grog! $5 cover.

Tomorrow night, Henry Welch hosts the main event with with our official Halloween Contest complete with promotions from the folks at Absolut. If you're in costume, no cover charge! $5 cover.

Sunday night, Parker Wheeler's Blues Party hosts both a Halloween Bash and a 16th Anniversary Party for Blues Audience Newsletter. Publisher Diane Shonk will be on hand to help with costume judging and the night's featured performers include Diane Blue, Amadee Castenell, Steve Burke, Mike Duke, Wolf Ginandes & Steve Bankuti. $5 cover

Monday night, we celebrate Halloween Brazilian-style. Banda Ponto Com will be warming up the night with the best of Latin music. $10 cover.

Tuesday night, we'll rest...but then on the hallowed eve itself Chad Verbeck hosts our weekly Hoot Night - aptly named for this particular night.

The World Series may thin the crowds for this weekend but, then again, that just leaves more room for the not-sports-obsessed.

Our Sunday Brunch returned this last week - a sure sign of the seasons changing. We serve our Brunch entrées from 11am to 2pm each Sunday in addition to our regular menu.

The Five Days - And Nights - Of Halloween

There's the 12 days of Christmas...and now for the Halloweened frenzied...there are the 5 nights of Halloween at The Grog.

We start on the Friday before Halloween with Third Man High, a funk rock group that did not want to be left out of the costume frenzy. The theme? Funky Halloween.

The next night the Henry Welch Band steps in for a major Halloween Bash. If you show up in get in free! spice up the night, its an Absolut promotion!

Sunday night, Parker Wheeler and Friends gets in on the action with a 'Blues Audience Newsletter' 16th Anniversary Party and a Blues Halloween Party. Diane Blue will be the featured performer and the Newsletter's publisher Diane Shonk will be on hand help judge costumes.

Once we got into this, we couldn't Monday night we're doing Halloween Brazilian-style. "Good Food...Good Music" Banda Ponto Com joins us for what promises to be a real party night!

We thought maybe people needed on night out of costume so we let Tuesday rest. Our Hoot Night on Wednesday, though, will be just that - Open Mic in full costume; what a way to go!

The Undaunted Professor Harp Joins This Sunday's Blues Party

Tomorrow night, Das Pintos returns. In May they packed the Downstairs in their benefit for Dads for Dafur. They're planning another night of 'funky splendor'! - $5 cover

Vykki Vox Hits The Sunday Blues Party

Parker Wheeler's Blues Party brings Vykki Vox back to the stage this Sunday. A well-known dynamo whose band performs in many venues, Vox is very active in CSN (Chick Singer Night) and, in fact, is the Director of the Boston CSN. Joining Vox & Wheeler on the Sunday Blues Stage will be Ken Clark of KCOT fame, Amadee Castenell, Erik Ringstad & Steve Bankuti - $5 cover.

This Weekend - Downstairs at The Grog

Tonight, John Eddie returns to The Grog. This special evening will start at 9pm with doors opening at 8pm. JTstriker, a popular New Hampshire performer will open for Eddie. It's about time you found out "Who The Hell Is John Eddie?" - $20 cover.

Tomorrow night, Not Broken returns for a great night of pop rock. This 4-piece band from the Methuen-Haverhill area has packed our Downstairs in their previous visits - $5 cover.

On Saturday night, Joppa Flatts hits the stage and the Downstairs will be jumping. Playing a mix of blues, rock & pop, this local band heats up a Saturday night $5 cover.

Michael Pickett Returns to the Sunday Blues Party

This Sunday, Michael Pickett rejoins Parker Wheeler & Friends for another great night of jams.

One of Canada's premier blues performers and multiple Canadian Music Award winner, Pickett returns to our Sunday stage performing selections from his Blues Album of the Year "Blues Money". He will be joined by guitarist Chris "Stovall" Brown and saxophonist Amadee Castenell and, of course, Parker. Show starts at 7pm - $7 cover.

Tonight, Third Stone arrives for their first showing at The Grog. Show starts at 8pm - $5 cover.

Newburyport Cocktail Competition

This coming Sunday, September 16th, Newburyport's first Cocktail Competition will take place. An adventurous group of participants will tour the best watering spots of Newburyport - tasting new concoctions and, finally, voting for the best new cocktail. Find more information on the event. We've been mixing and testing (tough job, but someones got to do it) and we'll be looking for your vote!
