It's Carnaval & Mardi Gras

Fat Tuesday is coming up - actually, this next week. We'll be celebrating Carnaval on Monday night in the Cabaret and there'll be Cajun specials on the menu through Tuesday. Come in and try some Cajun Catfish, Rainbow Trout with Cornbread, Gumbo, Jambalaya, Soft-Shelled Crab, or Conch Fritters and complete the meal with a wedge of Pecan Bourbon Pie or Mississippi Mud Pie. Let's see...what was the reason they called it Fat Tuesday?

All of this means that Ash Wednesday is on February 6th and Easter is on March 23rd. Why, you ask? Why does the date for Easter move as much as 30 days each year?

  • Easter falls on the first Sunday following the first ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after the day of the vernal equinox;
  • this particular ecclesiastical full moon is the 14th day of a tabular lunation (new moon); and
  • the vernal equinox is fixed as March 21.
